Independent Speech & Language Therapy

Supporting children in Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire

Hi there!

Welcome to Traintalk

We are a small team of Speech & Language Therapists working independently across Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland, and see children at their home, educational setting and/or in our therapy room, assessing and treating a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties.

Some concerns you may have

Do you or others have difficulty understanding what your child says? Does your child have difficulty answering questions? Does your child have difficulty playing with others or making friends? Are nursery or school staff raising concerns about your child’s communication skills? Is your child talking at home but not in other places?

Why choose Traintalk?

We have a combined 32 years of experience working with children with speech, language and communication needs in both the NHS and Independent sector. We work closely together to problem solve, skill share and provide support to ensure that children on our caseload receive the best possible care.

We are passionate about working with others to empower parents/teaching staff to know how best to develop their child’s communication skills. As parents we understand that seeking additional support for your child can be a difficult decision, so if we don’t think that we are the right team for your child then we can signpost you to another local therapist who can help.

Our specialist speech and language therapy services

We will carry out a comprehensive assessment of your child’s communication strengths and needs.

We’ll then provide advice and activity suggestions tailored to your child’s needs and interests.

Our 1:1 therapy sessions take place within your home, your child’s setting or our therapy room based in Market Harborough

We offer comprehensive training programmes for parents, carers and education staff.

From your initial appointment with us we shall tailor our advice & recommendations to your child – their strengths and interests as well as their needs.

We liaise directly with each setting to draw up a bespoke package to meet the individual needs of your school and students.

Beth is a highly skilled and experienced Speech and Language Therapist. She put my 4 year old daughter (and myself) quickly at ease. I found her to be both patient and motivating during the session. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed playing Beth’s games and as a family we have found her recommendations extremely helpful. I highly recommend her.

Beth was absolutely amazing with my daughter. She really took time to explain everything and I can tell she loves what she is doing. We were very lucky to get such amazing care.

We can provide assessment, direct therapy and therapy programmes (for home and/or school) tailored to the particular need of each individual child, with very clear monitoring of the child’s progress. Reports can be written upon request.

Each child will have a treatment plan which can inform their Individual Education Plan (IEP).

We offer:

  • One-to-one sessions, with home activities specifically tailored to your child’s needs.
o Appointments at short notice, and at times to suit your needs.
  • Full involvement of parents in the therapeutic process
  • A collaborative approach involving parents, school staff and other professionals
  • Liaison with the child’s NHS therapist.

If the initial assessment has identified that the child would benefit from speech and language therapy intervention then options will be discussed at this point. Our work is very much a partnership with the parents and the child’s educational setting. Parent involvement makes a significant difference to a child’s rate of progress. ‘Homework’ is often provided between sessions so that parents and families have ideas and strategies to continue work carried out in the sessions. This will help speed up the child’s progress and it is therefore incredibly important that parents/staff support this.

In some cases, we may suggest onward referral to other professionals if, for example, your child has difficulties with hearing, movement, social communication and/or learning. This might include an Ear, Nose and Throat Consultant, Audiologist, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Educational Psychologist, or another Speech and Language Therapist in a specialist area. We have considerable experience collaborating with school staff and other professionals.

Under the NHS Act, individuals are entitled to seek speech and language therapy from one or more services of their choice; however they are not entitled to seek a service from more than one NHS provider.

If an individual chooses to receive therapy both from the NHS and from an Independent service, it is in the individual’s best interest for the Speech and Language Therapists to collaborate and with client or parental permission, make assessment results available to each other. The aim is for the therapists to agree on a complementary approach. Liaison between therapists is a professional duty outlined by the Health Care Professions Council and we have lots of experience of very successful partnership working.

We provide a free initial telephone consultation (15 mins) to discuss parental concerns and the difficulties the child is experiencing. If it is felt that we can help, we will arrange an initial appointment which will be held either at the child’s school/pre-school, at the child’s home or in our therapy room based in Market Harborough.

If we are unable to help, we will endeavour to signpost you to another therapist working locally. Our initial appointment will include a detailed case history, a screening assessment of the child’s speech, language and communication skills with verbal advice and recommendations. We can also provide a written report, if requested.

We liaise directly with each setting to draw up a bespoke package of support. Within each package, services may include (but are not limited to):

  • Screening
  • Assessment
  • Therapy (individual, paired or group)
  • Review sessions (to update targets and identify need for further intervention)
  • Joint target setting
  • Training (whole school or small group) – please see below for more info

Adults in educational settings play a significant role in supporting speech and language development and promoting a learning environment which fosters language for thinking and learning.

We are able to offer a wide range of training packages for early years settings and schools which can be tailor made for you.
